About this site
Sakawa refers to the wreck of the Sakawa, a Japanese light cruiser that ended up at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands as part of the target fleet for the 1946 Operation Crossroads nuclear tests. The atoll's lagoon holds several former Japanese and American warships sunk or scuttled during those tests, and Bikini's isolation in the central Pacific has kept access to the site limited over the decades. The lagoon lies within the Ralik Chain of the Marshall Islands, far from major population centers.
