About this site
Shimo no Ose (下の大岩) is a boat site four minutes out from Shirasaki, Yura, on the Kii Peninsula of Wakayama, with a maximum depth of 20 m and an average around 10–14 m. Two huge rocks, Shimo no Ose and Sakoroku, form the site: the first has two arches sheltering moray eels and sweepers, the second carries anemonefish and domino damsels on its top. From summer into early autumn, curtains of silver-stripe round herring and schools of rainbow runner pass through, along with chicken grunt, jacks, barracuda and eagle rays; there is little current and the site is suitable from beginner level.
