About this site
Stonehenge sits in the Adang-Rawi archipelago off Koh Lipe, in the far south of Thailand near the Malaysian border, and it takes its name from the field of large granite boulders scattered across the bottom. The rocks form ridges, gaps and small swim-throughs, and the whole site is dressed in soft coral and sea fans that thrive in the moving water. For all the boulder scenery, Stonehenge is a macro diver's site at heart. The soft coral and rubble shelter seahorses, ornate ghost pipefish, frogfish, lionfish and a rich run of nudibranchs, while schooling barracuda and the occasional passing pelagic work the edges. The southern Andaman around Koh Lipe carries real tidal current, which is what keeps the soft coral fed, and depth here reaches into the mid-twenties. Combined, that makes Stonehenge an advanced dive, best run on the calmer tides of the season that follows the monsoon.
