About this site

The Great Blue Hole is a large marine sinkhole in the middle of Lighthouse Reef Atoll, off the coast of Belize, formed as a limestone cave system that flooded and collapsed as sea levels rose during past ice ages. It reaches a maximum depth of about 125 metres, and divers descend along a wall lined with stalactites and overhangs, clear evidence of its origin as a dry cave. Visibility inside the hole is great, and the dive is rated technical, with the depth, the need for careful buoyancy control near the overhangs, and decompression requirements making it easy to go deeper than intended without realizing it. Angelfish, grouper, and nurse sharks are regularly seen around the walls, and divers have also reported bull sharks, hammerheads, reef sharks, tiger sharks, moray eels, lobster, snapper, and parrotfish here. It is usually reached by boat from Belize City or from resorts on the nearby cayes.
