Torizaki Wreck

Torizaki Wreck (通り崎・沈船) is a boat-dive site at Toi, Izu, on the west coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka, intermediate and above, with rare strong current from early spring to early summer; visibility is best on north-east to east winds and the site suffers in south-west to west winds. Ten wooden vessels, scuttled with the cooperation of the Toi fishing cooperative up to 1991, lie between the eastern tip of the Torizaki cape and the Ohanabatake site, with the Bentenmaru (Wreck I) and Suitenmaru (Wreck II) as the main hulls and a large wreck between them where dives usually begin. All the hulls shelter fish year-round, with schools of cardinalfish, juvenile gnomefish, damselfish and, in season, jack, chicken grunt, takabe, amberjack, yellowtail amberjack, bannerfish and batfish, plus lancetfish in May–June and ocean sunfish from Golden Week through May; the average depth is deep, so buoyancy and air consumption need attention.
