About this site
Tortagonia lies within the fringing reef system of Palmyra Atoll, a remote coral atoll in the Northern Line Islands of the Central Pacific, managed as a National Wildlife Refuge and reached mainly by private boat or research vessel. Sites around the atoll's reefs and passes are known for steep drop-offs into deep ocean water just offshore. Divers at Tortagonia have reported bicolor chromis, bird wrasse, fivestripe wrasse, Pacific bullethead parrotfish, whitecheek surgeonfish, and two-spot red snapper moving over stands of plate and pillar coral.
