About this site
The Amami Wreck (沈船あまみ) off Yoron Island in Kagoshima Prefecture is the former patrol vessel Amami, 51.43 m long, sunk on 8 May 1993 as one of the largest wreck sites in Japan and now lying at 40 m. It is a boat dive about 5 minutes from Chabana harbour, with moderate to strong current. Batfish gather on the mast, fusiliers school around the hull, and dogtooth tuna, giant trevally and bluefin trevally pass through depending on the tide, with green turtles resident nearby; the shallows hold anemonefish, butterflyfish and gobies.
