America

The America was a passenger and package freight steamer that ran routes around Lake Superior, including service to Isle Royale, and sank in 1928 after striking a reef near Washington Harbor. The wreck lies just off Isle Royale National Park in Minnesota waters of Lake Superior, with its bow resting in only a few metres of water and the stern sloping down to a maximum depth of about 24.4 metres. This range makes the bow accessible to newer divers while the deeper stern sections and the cold, dark water of the lake call for more experience. The hull is largely intact and popular with divers for its penetration opportunities into the cargo holds and engine room. Visibility in Lake Superior can be excellent, but water temperatures stay cold year round, so thermal protection is a serious consideration on this dive.
