George M. Cox

The George M. Cox was a passenger steamer that ran aground on Rock of Ages Reef off Isle Royale in 1933 after apparently misjudging the reef in fog, though all aboard survived. The wreck lies near the western tip of Isle Royale National Park in Lake Superior, broken up considerably by decades of wave action against the reef. Its remains are scattered across a slope, with sections found from shallow water down to around 30 metres or more, making it a dive that rewards some wreck experience. Lake Superior's cold, clear water keeps visibility good but also means cold temperatures and the need for proper thermal protection year round. Currents and the exposed position of the reef mean conditions can be demanding, so it is generally considered a dive for those comfortable with cold-water wreck diving.
