About this site
The SS America lies near Isle Royale in Lake Superior, off the Michigan coast within Isle Royale National Park. She was a wooden-hulled passenger and freight steamer that struck a reef near Washington Harbor in 1928 and sank in the cold, clear waters there. The wreck is a well known dive within the park, with the bow resting in shallow water close to shore and the stern descending into deeper water beyond it. The bow section, reaching a maximum depth of around 9.1 metres, is rated a beginner dive, giving divers an accessible look at the wreck before it drops off into the darker depths where the stern lies.
