About this site
The propeller Canisteo was involved in a collision with a sailing vessel near Waugoshance Light, and her capain ran her into shallow water in an attempt to save her. A rising storm destroyed the ship before salvage could be attempted. This is the same storm that sank the Alpena in lower Lake Michigan. Much of the hull is ground up by ice, but debris lies scattered about the entire area. Lies in about 4.6 m; sank 1880.
