About this site
The Colonel Ellsworth spent the fall and winter of 1895 ashore at Whitefish Point, and was recovered and repaired in 1896. She had only been back to work for a short time when she was involved in a collision with the Emily Maxwell off Waugoshance Light in a gale and rainstorm. The crew escaped as the Ellsworth sank in 80 ft. Her anchors and usable equipment were later salvaged. Masts and other gear lie about the wreck. Lies in about 24.4 m; sank 1896.
