Chac Mool Cenote

Chac Mool Cenote sits along the cenote corridor south of Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo, part of the freshwater cave system running through the Yucatan Peninsula's limestone bedrock. It reaches a maximum depth of around 13.3 metres and is rated a beginner dive, with a cave bottom and visibility described as great. The site is known for its halocline, where fresh and saline layers meet and create a visual blur before the water clears again below, and divers have also reported effects from that halocline elsewhere in the system along with patches of darkness, low light, and fragile formations. As with any cenote dive, it is an overhead environment, a hazard confirmed at this site, so guidance and proper training for the overhead sections remain important even where the depth itself stays shallow.
