About this site
Christmas Point sits at the northern tip of Bangu Island in the Similan Islands National Park, off the Phang Nga coast of southern Thailand. The site is known for large granite boulders that form swim-throughs and archways, a formation typical of the western side of the Similans chain, with a rocky bottom reaching a maximum depth of around 40 metres. It is rated an intermediate dive with medium current and generally good visibility. Grouper, leopard and zebra sharks, mola mola, humphead wrasse, and sea turtles are regularly encountered here, and divers have also reported barracuda, eagle rays, manta rays, moray eels, reef sharks, sweetlips, trevally, tuna, and various reef fish such as fusiliers, snapper, and nudibranchs. Some divers have noted the deeper sections and stronger currents as the more challenging part of the dive. The site is reachable mainly by liveaboard or day boat from Khao Lak or Phuket during the park's open season, roughly November to April, since the Similans close to visitors the rest of the year due to monsoon conditions.
