City of Bangor

The City of Bangor was built as a bulk freighter in 1896, and was lengthened 72 ft in 1905. Converted to carry autos in 1925, she did not last long in her new trade. In late November 1926 she was carrying 248 new Chrysler autos to Duluth when she encountered heavy seas off Eagle Harbor and started losing cars off her deck. The captain turned around, hoping to shelter around Keweenaw Point, but the rudder was damaged and the vessel was driven ashore east of Copper Harbor. The crew was able to reach shore easily, and after a cold snowy night around a campfire, they made the difficult walk to Copper Harbor and safety. The remaining autos were recovered that winter, driven across the frozen lake to shore, and then eventually back to the railhead at Calumet. The vessel was too damaged to salvage, and was abandoned until WW2 when the demand for scrap metal made it worth the effort to cut the vessel into pieces for removal. Only small portions of this vessel may remain. Lies in about 4.6 m; sank 1926.
