Not recognizing that the vessel had drifted after recovering a buoy, the Mesquite ran aground when she turned towards her next assigned pickup. Not severely damaged at first, a lack of leadership among her damage control party combined with rising waves that further ground her hull on the rocks, her crew were taken off by a passing vessel. Because of the time of year, she could not be removed before winter and she was damaged beyond repair. As she was a total loss, the Coast Guard agreed to the intentional sinking of the Mesquite as a dive site. Most of her equipment is still on deck. Part of the pilot house was removed during the sinking and is now located near the hull. Lies in about 34.1 m; sank 1989.
