About this site
Possibly the oldest known shipwreck on Lake Superior, the John Jacob Astor was lost September 21, 1844 near the dock of old Fort Wilkins. Built at Black River, Ohio in 1835, the Astor was the first commercial vessel on Lake Superior after being portaged around the rapids at Sault Ste Marie. After stranding, she could not be refloated before winter and broke up in the severe conditions. Her rigging and portable equipment were salvaged. Lies in about 10.7 m; sank 1844.
