About this site
Elephant Head is a well-known dive site in the Similan Islands National Park off Phang Nga, in the Andaman Sea of southern Thailand. It is built around a cluster of huge granite boulders that break the surface and continue underwater, forming swim-throughs, archways and gullies between the rocks over a rocky bottom. Depths reach around 41.3 metres, and the site is rated an intermediate dive with strong currents that can bring whirlpools, up and down currents and upwelling around the boulders, so buoyancy control and current awareness matter here. Visibility is generally great, and barracuda, reef sharks, trevally and tuna are regularly seen along the rock structures. Divers have also reported angelfish, anthias, batfish, frogfish, fusiliers, leopard sharks, manta rays, moray eels, humphead wrasse, nudibranchs, ornate ghost pipefish, scorpionfish, turtles, snapper, sweetlips, whale sharks and other wrasse species at the site. It is usually reached by liveaboard or day boat from Khao Lak or Phuket as part of a Similans itinerary.
