About this site
Hokake Iwa (帆掛岩) is a rock breaking the surface midway between Mukojima and Hirashima off Hahajima in the Ogasawara Islands, Tokyo, 20 minutes by boat, with a maximum depth of 25 m. Below the surface the rock is a shelter for fish that favour shade, and the tide that sweeps it brings pelagics such as spotted eagle rays, Spanish mackerel and giant trevally, with yellowback fusiliers, triggerfish and spotted knifejaw on the rock. When the current runs it is fast and the site is for advanced divers only.
