About this site
Hokkawa Onsen (温泉) is a boat-dive site 2 minutes from the harbour at Hokkawa, Higashiizu, on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka, with a maximum depth of 17 m and an average around 14–16 m, suitable from beginner level. The bottom is sand and boulders, and hot-spring water can be seen bubbling up through the sand, with table coral that is unusual for Izu. Nudibranchs and frogfish live on the rock, egg cowries and crustaceans on the sea fans and soft coral, overwintering anemonefish are present, and summer to autumn brings tropical visitors such as wrought-iron butterflyfish, ghost pipefish and harlequin shrimp.
