About this site
Irozu (色津) is the nearest boat site to Yuzaki harbour at Shirahama on the Kii Peninsula of Wakayama, about three minutes out, with a maximum depth of 16 m and an average around 8 m. It lies in a sheltered inner bay and is easy enough for beginners, yet arches of all sizes and channels with walls close to 10 m high stand on clean sand. Sweepers and cardinalfish pack the arches and channels with frogfish and lionfish hunting them, flounder, sole, gobies of many kinds and conger eels live on the sand, and soft corals grow thickly on the rock; there is little current and the site is suitable from novice level.
