About this site
Shirahama Wreck (白浜 沈船) is a boat dive at Shirahama on the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama, about five minutes from the harbour, with a maximum depth of 18 m and an average around 14 m. A gravel barge just under 20 m long lies on its side on the sand at 18 m and shelters longtooth grouper close to a metre long, large octopus, lionfish, moray eels and cardinalfish, while yellowstriped butterfish hold near the surface and schools of chicken grunt sit in midwater. Summer to autumn brings ornate ghost pipefish, butterflyfish and juvenile emperor angelfish; winter brings juvenile dragonets and John Dory, schooling mojarra and pennant bannerfish. Little current, suitable from beginner/novice level, and night boat dives are run here as well.
