About this site
Kawana Beach (川奈ビーチ) is a shore-entry site at Kawana, Ito, on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka, with a maximum depth of 18 m and an average around 8 m, suitable from beginner level with no current, entered by a slope with handrails. Rocky reef lies to the right and sand to the left heading offshore, and the sandy-mud patches, unusual for eastern Izu, hold a succession of rare gobies. Spawning frames are sunk each year so bigfin reef squid spawn almost daily in early summer, lumpsuckers are common in winter, and frogfish, nudibranchs, snailfish, soft-coral crabs and whip-coral shrimp are regular finds.
