About this site
Kora (コウラ) is a boat site 15 minutes from Hachijojima in the Izu Islands, Tokyo, where three long, narrow reefs run offshore and the entry point is chosen according to the tide. Around June, balls of wrought-iron butterflyfish gather near the shore, and spotted knifejaw and damselfish live in large schools; maximum depth 30 m, average around 18 m, suitable from beginner level, with current. Large pelagics such as amberjack, yellowtail amberjack and rainbow runners can be expected at the tips of the reefs, and a surface marker must be sent up before ascending as the site lies on a fishing-boat route.
