About this site
Naka no Mama (中のママ) is a boat site 20 minutes from Hachijojima in the Izu Islands, Tokyo, close to Nazumado. The bottom slopes gradually and continues into deep water offshore, so depth needs particular attention; maximum depth 30 m, average around 16 m, suitable from beginner level, with some current. It is known for a colony of garden eels of a species found only in the waters around Hachijojima and Hachijo-kojima and Taiwan, which are very shy and best watched quietly; amberjack, dogtooth tuna, pelagic threshers, hammerheads and turtles are also seen, and a surface marker must be sent up before ascending as the site lies on a fishing-boat route.
