About this site
Naka no Mama is a boat-diving site located on the north-western coast of Hachijō Island, near the site of Nazumado, featuring a sloping profile built from a series of volcanic rock formations that extend out toward the open sea.
The terrain descends along that sloping volcanic rock bottom, with a notable field of Pacific Spaghetti Eels (Gorgasia japonica), a type of garden eel, beginning at 25 m depth. The eels' long, thin bodies undulate in unison, covering a vast area of the bottom.
The site is exposed and regularly swept by strong currents, which bring in schooling fish and roaming schools of island trevallies. The current increases the chance of encountering larger, more active fish throughout the dive.
