About this site
Kujira (クジラ) is a boat site five minutes out from Shirasaki, Yura, on the Kii Peninsula of Wakayama, with a maximum depth of 18 m and an average around 12–16 m. The site is built of boulders and limestone around a rock called Kujira that shows above the surface at low tide, with sea fans, gorgonians and whip coral on the seaward side and life ranging from pelagics such as takabe and sardines to crustaceans including whip coral shrimp and squat lobsters. It is open only from 2 May to 10 September, a guide rope is laid for close observation, there is little current and the site is suitable from beginner level.
