About this site
Molasses Reef sits in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary off Key Largo, one of the outer reef tracts along the Florida Reef Tract. It is a spur and groove coral formation and is among the most heavily dived sites in the Keys, known for coral ridges cut by sand channels running seaward. Divers commonly encounter nurse sharks, moray eels, and a mix of reef fish including parrotfish and grunts along its ledges. Depths here are generally shallow, running from around 6 to 12 metres, and the site is rated a beginner dive, accessible to snorkelers and less experienced divers alike. A lighthouse tower marks the site from the surface, and mooring buoys are used to protect the coral from anchor damage.
