About this site
Shushoke (休憩所下) is a shore-entry site on Hachijojima in the Izu Islands, Tokyo, entered from the rocks straight into a 15 m long cave at 7 m depth, which the dive starts by passing through. Following the reef offshore leads to an arch, and the lava seabed shows Hachijo's volcanic topography in full; maximum depth 21 m, average around 12 m, suitable from beginner level, with little current. Anemonefish are plentiful, along with rays such as blue-spotted stingrays and guitarfish, sweepers, boarfish, green turtles and barracuda; the footing at the entry is poor, access hours are restricted from December to April, and the grassy area on shore is a popular lunch spot.
