About this site
The Northwest was a four-mast schooner barge that was cut by ice in April 1898. She sank while being towed to shallow water in an attempt to save her. This wreck is broken up onto itself by salvage attempts and wave action, but plenty of artifacts remain for divers to view. It is relatively shallow, in 65 ft, and is in spring is covered with spawing whitefish and perch. A small boiler and steam winch for working the sails is located forward of amidships. Lies in about 22.3 m; sank 1898.
