Pilarsteen sits within the Komodo National Park area of West Manggarai Regency, in the waters near Padar island in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It is a reef dive reaching a maximum depth of around 40 metres, rated intermediate with medium current. Divers have reported cold water along with southern surge and swell here, and sightings have included barracuda, hammerhead sharks, mola mola, nudibranchs and trevally. The site lies among the passages between Komodo and Padar, an area known generally for its shifting currents and volcanic seabed.
