About this site
Rakuda (ラクダ) is a large shore-entry site off Noda Hama on Izu Oshima in the Izu Islands, Tokyo, dived along a shelf-like reef that extends offshore and becomes a drop-off with increasing relief. It has the strongest current on the island, at times so fast that progress means pulling along the wall, and dives often end up as drifts; maximum depth 40 m, average around 12 m, rated from beginner level, but good buoyancy control and attention to air consumption are essential. Its regulars are boarfish, higedai grunts and metre-class longtooth grouper, Japanese wobbegongs rest on the reef top, and Japanese amberjack and amberjack can turn up in large numbers.
