About this site

Sail Rock rises as a granite pinnacle in the Gulf of Thailand between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, off Surat Thani province in southern Thailand, with only a small tip breaking the surface and a vertical swim-through chimney running through the rock from about 6 metres down to 18 metres. Diving here is rated intermediate to a maximum depth of 18 metres, over a rocky bottom, and current is strong, a known hazard that divers should check before descending. Visibility is generally great, and the site is well known for chances of encountering whale sharks, along with barracuda, batfish, fusilier, grouper, nudibranch, and trevally around the pinnacle. Divers have also reported bull sharks, reef sharks, snapper, tuna, triggerfish, mackerel, clownfish, lionfish, scorpionfish, and stonefish here. It is usually reached by boat from Koh Tao or Koh Phangan rather than from the mainland.
