About this site
Shihonbae (シホンバエ) is the southernmost boat dive at Shirahama on the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama, fifteen minutes from the harbour, with a maximum depth of 15 m and an average around 9 m. A very broad reef sits on white sand at 15 m, its flanks covered in soft coral, and a large vertical crack through the middle is crowded with grouper, sweepers and squirrelfish. Butterflyfish school further offshore. Shallow and calm with little current, it is dived from beginner/novice level, often as an unhurried summer dive.
