About this site
Shirahama (白浜) is a boat dive off the Sandanbeki cliffs at Shirahama on the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama, ten minutes from the harbour, with a maximum depth of 30 m and an average around 18 m. The anchor sits on a shelf at only 5 to 8 m and the terrain steps down in ledges at 18 m and 22 m to beyond 30 m, so the route can be matched to the diver. Steep walls mirror the cliffs above, and from summer into early winter schools of chicken grunt, silver-stripe round herring and sardines draw in yellowtail and amberjack, while the shallow shelf holds octopus, blennies and juvenile tropical strays. Current at times, suitable from beginner/novice level.
