About this site
Tonbara (トンバラ) is a boat-dive site around the Tonbara rock off the south of Kume Island, Okinawa, about 25 minutes from harbour, with a maximum depth of 30 m and an average around 16 m. It is one of the island's two headline sites and one of Okinawa's main big-fish spots, with large boulders scattered underwater. Whitetip reef sharks rest in the shadows, dogtooth tuna and bigeye trevally pass through, and schools of hammerhead sharks are encountered in winter, though results vary greatly from dive to dive. Intermediate and above.
