About this site
Yaene Minato (八重根港) is a harbour site on Hachijojima in the Izu Islands, Tokyo, known as the old Yaene port though officially the new harbour, and it stays diveable all year even in strong winds. As the name suggests several reefs interlock in an interesting layout with abundant macro life, green turtles and amberjack are seen fairly often, and offshore there is a huge arch and an anemonefish colony of several dozen fish, some unusually large; maximum depth 21 m, average around 15 m, suitable from beginner level, with little current. Harlequin shrimp and other rarities can turn up several times in one dive; there are no-diving zones and parking limits, and entry is from the slope only, with giant-stride entries prohibited.
