About this site
Akai Hama (赤井浜) is a sheltered cove reached by a short boat ride from Kumomi on the west coast of the Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka, with an open-air hot spring on shore. The bottom is white sand in the centre with rocky reef on both sides; maximum depth 10 m, average around 8 m, from novice level with no current, and it serves as the fallback site when the beach is closed. A sargassum forest attracts bigfin reef squid, which gather and spawn here, and guitarfish come in to spawn in summer; damselfish, scorpionfish and jacks are also common.
