About this site
Gunkan (軍艦) is a boat site 3 minutes from Kumomi on the west coast of the Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka, named for a huge rock more than 40 m long and over 10 m high that sits on a wide sand flat like a stranded warship. Soft coral surrounds the rock and a large anemone with colourful reef fish crowns its top; maximum depth 26 m, average around 16 m, intermediate and above, with current depending on the season. Lying on the boundary between Kumomi's inner and outer waters it is a spot for large pelagics, and guitarfish, stingrays, eagle rays, amberjack, yellowtail, round herring, anemonefish, angel sharks, frogfish and seahorses are typical; divers with good air consumption can continue from Ushitsuki Iwa via Gunkan to Mitsune.
