About this site

Batu Bolong is a small rock that breaks the surface in the middle of a Komodo channel between Tatawa and Komodo island, and its Indonesian name means hollow rock. Around it runs some of the fiercest current in Indonesia, and that current is the reason the reef beneath it is one of the healthiest anywhere in the park. Divers work the sheltered lee of the pinnacle, where a coral-smothered wall drops away swarming with anthias, surgeonfish and fusiliers, patrolled by reef sharks, giant trevally and Napoleon wrasse, with turtles and pygmy seahorses tucked into the reef. Because the current sweeps the rock clean and keeps it fed, the coral cover here is exceptional from the shallows down. Timing the tide is everything at Batu Bolong. The current can turn to strong up and down movement off the exposed faces, so divers stay on the calm side and it is run as an advanced, guide-led dive.
