About this site

Makassar Reef lies within Komodo National Park in West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, reached by boat from Labuan Bajo. This part of the archipelago sits between the Flores and Sumbawa straits, an area of strong tidal exchange between the Flores Sea and the Indian Ocean, and that exchange shows up here as a strong current over a sand bottom. The site has a maximum depth of around 15 metres, visibility is generally good, and despite the current it is rated a beginner dive. Eagle rays, fusiliers, and manta rays are regularly encountered, and divers have also reported barracuda, bumphead parrotfish, octopus, parrotfish, snapper, sweetlips, trevally, and wrasse.
