About this site
Takarajima Nishi (美国宝島 西) is a shallow boat-dive site on the west side of Takarajima at Bikuni on the Shakotan Peninsula, Hokkaido, about four minutes from Bikuni harbour, with a maximum depth of 13 m and an average around 6 m. A bay-shaped basin at 5 m gives stable conditions for entry-level training, and the bottom deepens gently offshore over rock, gravel and sand with varied habitat. No current; suitable from beginner level, and used for macro and wide-angle photography as well as introductory dives. Blennies, damselfish, juvenile sheepshead wrasse, striped beakfish, gobies, sculpins, atka mackerel, giant Pacific octopus, cup corals and nudibranchs are typical, with Steller sea lions and seals from about December to March.
