About this site

The Duane rests off Key Largo, Florida, in the upper Florida Keys. She was a United States Coast Guard cutter, a 327-foot Treasury-class ship, deliberately sunk as an artificial reef in 1987 after decades of active service that included convoy escort duty in World War II. She sits upright on the sand, which makes her a popular and approachable wreck, and the site is rated a beginner dive with a maximum depth of about 38 metres, though divers commonly explore the shallower upper decks and superstructure well above that. Divers here have reported barracuda, bull shark, great white shark, grouper, hammerhead shark, moray eel, nurse shark, reef shark, eagle ray, sea turtle, snapper, and whale shark, though not all of these should be expected on a given dive and sightings vary widely. The structure is heavily encrusted after decades underwater, adding to its appeal as a photogenic, easy-access wreck dive.
