About this site
Hyotan (ひょうたん) is a boat dive about 20 minutes from Chichijima in the Ogasawara Islands, Tokyo, on a sloping coral reef with a maximum depth of 30 m and an average around 14 m. Helfrich's dartfish live in the deep water beyond 30 m and often come up shallower, while the shallows hold schooling batfish and very large numbers of fire dartfish, plus glasseyes, damselfish and Japanese and lemonpeel angelfish. There is little current and the site is suitable from beginner level.
