About this site
Mikomoto Island lies off the southern tip of Izu, close to Shimoda and 30 to 60 minutes away by boat. It is the most famous dive site in the area, and it is known as the hammerhead location because of the Kuroshio, the black current.
Large schools of hammerhead sharks have been seen here around August and September, depending on conditions. The currents and conditions make Mikomoto a site for advanced divers only.
