About this site
Mikomoto Island sits off the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, at the point where the peninsula meets the open Pacific. It is a small rocky island reached by boat from the Izu diving towns nearby, and the surrounding waters are known among Japanese divers for strong currents driven by that open ocean exposure. Diving here reaches a maximum depth of around 35 metres and is rated advanced, largely due to that strong current. Hammerhead sharks are a confirmed draw at the site, making it one of the more notable spots in Japan for encountering them.
