About this site
Mitsune (三つ根) is a boat site 16 minutes out on the north side of Mikomoto Island off Shimoda, southern Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka, affected by both ebb and flood. The reef is asymmetric: the west side is flat and slopes gently into the deep, dived for amberjack, Japanese amberjack, yellowtail and requiem sharks, while the east side is a cluster of reefs with passages between them packed with takabe, chicken grunt, surgeonfish, largescale blackfish and damselfish; maximum depth 30 m, average around 19 m, intermediate and above, with current. Striped beakfish, spotted knifejaw and banded houndsharks live in the passages, longtooth grouper, flounder and red sea bream gather near the exit, and ocean sunfish are an occasional rarity.
