About this site
Sokodo (底土) is a shore-entry site on Hachijojima in the Izu Islands, Tokyo, the only beach site that works when a westerly is blowing, and stable all year. Entry is from the pier that juts offshore, and heading straight out leads easily to the three-legged arch that gives the site its name, at a relatively shallow 14 m; maximum depth 20 m, average around 10 m, suitable from beginner level, with little current. An artificial reef beneath the arch holds boarfish, painted sweetlips, spotted knifejaw and porcupinefish, with semicircle angelfish and green turtles also seen; this is the island's largest swimming beach, so it is busy with swimmers and children jumping from the pier in season.
