About this site
Wakinohama (脇の浜) is a wide shore-entry site on the west side of Futo harbour at Futo, Ito, on the east coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka, with a maximum depth of 30 m, suitable from beginner level with little current, and with slopes and handrails. The sand is coarser and darker than at Yokobama, so the bottom life differs: Japanese bullhead sharks, angel sharks, guitarfish, flounder, stingrays and thornback rays, plus many blennies and commensal shrimps, with frogfish, seahorses and a wide range of nudibranchs on the boulders. Spring to early summer brings juvenile bullhead sharks, red frog crabs and bigfin reef squid spawning, and a recently placed artificial reef holds mullet and largescale blackfish.
