About this site
Amida Iwa (アミダ岩) is a large submerged pinnacle at Bikuni on the Shakotan Peninsula, Hokkaido, just offshore of the Byobu-iwa rocks visible from Shimamui beach, with a maximum depth of 26 m and an average around 13 m. The formation spans about 90 m north to south and 80 m east to west, and is cut by many crevasses that shelter marine life; on the north side slabs of rock hold flounder over a metre long, while sand lance, rockfish and greenling school around it. Occasional current; intermediate and above. Because the surrounding bottom is deeper than 20 m and the full circuit reaches 25–26 m, it is dived as a multi-level profile and suits deep training.
