About this site
Takenoko Iwa (タケノコ岩) is a boat-dive site on the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido, fifteen minutes from Horomui harbour, with a maximum depth of 24 m and an average around 18 m. Entry is from the boat or from the rock itself, which has a sheltered 2 m inlet out of the swell; from there the bottom steps from 2 m to 7 m and then drops straight to 20 m, with hidden pinnacles and a cave. Strong current; intermediate and above. Sea ravens, atka mackerel and giant Pacific octopus appear from late October, with lumpfish, snailfish and Steller sea lions from mid-November.
