About this site
Canyon (キャニオン) is a boat-dive site on the Shakotan Peninsula in Hokkaido, seventeen minutes from Horomui harbour, with a maximum depth of 22 m and an average around 10 m. Columnar basalt rises straight out of the sand, among the tallest formations on the peninsula, and the shallows are the most striking part of the dive. Little current; suitable from beginner/novice level. Fat greenling, rockfish, juvenile sheepshead wrasse, gobies and filefish are typical, with sea ravens, atka mackerel and octopus from late October and lumpfish and Steller sea lions from mid-November.
